Going Green
I received a comment on my blog last week that set me thinking about green juices. I've grown pretty reliant on having carrots, apple and ginger in my juice, which helps to offset the taste of the stronger vegetables, such as kale, spinach, etc. So, I set a challenge for myself to make a juice that was 100% green. Going green is in these days, right?
We all know that we should eat more leafy greens, so how do we incorporate more greens into juice? I started by emptying out my refrigerator, and picking out all green veggies. I came up with the following:
- 1/2 Cucumber
- 2 sticks of celery
- Head of broccoli
- 4 kale leaves
- 1 leaf of Swiss Chard
- 1/2 Sweet green pepper
- Handful of sprout salad mix
Green is Good! This simple juice is overloaded with nutrients:
Cucumber: Naturally distilled water which helps regulate body temperature, helps in cell hydration, waste removal and dissolution of kidney stones. Lots of silica in the skin, which strengthens connective tissue.
Celery: Aids in treatment of respiratory ailments such as asthma. Helps prevent colon and stomach cancers. Acts as a natual diet aid as it curbs appetite. High in potassium, essential amino acids, Vit. A, B-complex, C, calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium…
Broccoli:Helps prevent cancer, Vit. C, calcium, phosphorous, essential amino acids.
Kale: Great for calcium, helps prevent cancer, helps oxygenate the blood and improve cell circulation. Also is a good source of chlorophyll, provitamin A, Vit. C, E, B6 , K and folic acid.
Chard: High in Thiamin, Folate, Zinc, Vit. A, C, E, K, B6, Calcium, Iron, and more…
Green Pepper: Vit. C, silicon, helps intestinal issues. Also good source for calcium, phosphorus, potassium
Sprouts: Phytochemicals help protect against disease, and cancers. High source of protein, chlorophyll, Vit. B12
