Green Smoothie

I'm thankful that I've started this blog, as its forced me to start thinking outside the box to create new variations of juice. Before this, I would just buy a stack of veg, and juice whatever I found. Now, I'm trying out new combinations, so I can share with everyone reading this.

I made this juice for the first time today, and I have to say, it was much better than I had expected. Given that it has so much fruit, I would recommend reducing the fruit down to 1 piece (if any) if you are doing the actual detox diet.

Another plus point was that my 3 year old loved it! He got a straw for himself, and sucked back more veggies than he had eaten in days... isn't veggie juice great??

Oh did you know that 1 kiwi has the Vitamin C content of about 2 oranges?

Here is the recipe:

  • 2 Apples (I used Granny Smith, to keep the "Green" Theme)
  • 1 Pear
  • 2 Florets of Broccoli
  • 2 Celery Sticks
  • Handful of Broccoli Sprouts
  • 2 Kiwi (you may need another if your kids eat the first while you are juicing!)

Cut up the apples, pear, broccoli, and celery and put through the juicer. Pour the juice into the blender and add the kiwi. Give a whizz for a few mins until blended through. Makes about 1.5 - 2 pints, or 2 generous servings. Serve & Enjoy.

Celery: Aids in treatment of respiratory ailments such as asthma. Helps prevent colon and stomach cancers. Acts as a natual diet aid as it curbs appetite. High in potassium, essential amino acids, Vit. A, B-complex, C, calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium…

Broccoli:Helps prevent cancer, Vitamin. C, calcium, phosphorous, essential amino acids. American Cancer Society recommends eating broccoli 3 times per week - this juice has just provided about 3 servings!

Broccoli Sprouts: contain 20-50 times more sulforaphane than the average adult broccoli plant which has been shown to have anti-cancer properties in studies as it can reduce the production of malignant tumors.

Pear: Being rich in vitamin C, pears have antioxidant properties and are said to protect body cells from oxygen-related damage caused by free radicals. Pear juice, being rich in fructose and glucose, serves as a very quick source of energy. Drinking a glass of pear juice is believed to be helpful in bringing down fever. The antioxidant properties of pears make them good for strengthening of the immune system.

Kiwi: Vitamin A, C, Folate, B Vitamins, Vit. E, Lots of Minerals

Detox Supplies

Juice of the Day

Carrot, Apple & Ginger

You will need: 1 apple, 3-4 carrots, and a slice of ginger.

Juice the apple and carrots and ginger slice in the juicer. Serve immediately!

Delicious!

This is a juice that I use as a baseline for other juices. To add more "power" try adding the following ingredients:

- Stick of Celery
- Handful of Alfalfa sprouts
- Some kale, spinach, other leafy greens

Soup of the Day - the healthy way!

Butternut Squash & Orange Juice

Split a butternut squash down the middle, and scoop out the seeds and set aside. Wash & dry and place on a baking tray. Place a tablespoon of orange juice in the cavity. Cover with foil and bake in a 375 deg. oven for about 45 mins - 1 hr. Test the flesh with a fork - when its soft, its done! Meanwhile, while the squash is cooking, wash the seeds, removing fibers of flesh, and place on a baking tray to dry. Remove baked squash from the oven and allow to cool. Pour the OJ into a blender, and scoop out all of the flesh into the blender, discarding the skins. Puree the squash, and then pour into a saucepan. Add about 6 cups of distilled or spring water (do not use tap water, as it contains chlorine etc which defeats your healthy mission). Bring to the boil and its ready to eat!

When the seeds have dried, bake them in the oven for 30 mins until roasted. Sprinkle on top of the soup and serve.

Enjoy!
