Preparing to Detox - Shopping List

>> Wednesday, February 25, 2009

If you are reading this blog, hopefully you have read the book 21 Pounds in 21 Days, as you will need the information from this book to give you what you need to succeed on the diet.

However, having read this book, and being a keen (but not consistent) juicer prior to starting the diet, I still had to spend time preparing to start the diet. And throughout the diet, I found that because I hadn't gotten my full shopping list together prior to starting the diet, I wasn't able to do certain cleanses when it called for it in the diet schedule. It made it more difficult than it needed to be...

So this blog should be a resource for anyone starting the diet. I've collated all the essential items needed before you start. The one exception is the "kit" that is available at www.mvdietdetox.com - this kit contains some green powder drinks , protein supplements, and an inner cleanse supplement. While you can buy these items at a health food store, I took the easy path, and figured that if I spend the $$ upfront to buy the whole kit, I would be more likely to make sure I hadn't wasted that investment, and I would then stick to the diet. Mind over matter....

When buying vegetables, buy organic where you can. Also look for health food stores rather than the "big box" grocery stores if you can as I have found that the vegetables at the health food stores were so much fresher than the other stores (if your veggie leaf or carrot falls over when you pick it up...its dead. A fresh veggie will be crisp and stand up. There is no comparison to fresh....and when you have had it once, you will become addicted!).

My advice is to make up a veggie juice and soup menu per week and make up your veggie shopping list based on that menu. You may not need all the items listed below, but you won't go far wrong if you get those items...

I haven't included a juicer on this list - if you plan to make live veggie juice then you will need one. I'd recommend it. I think its one of the best investments you can make in yourself and your health.

So here is my shopping list for other necessary items:

Aloe vera (I'd recommend the liquid over the gel...you can get this at the health food shop, and no, its not the kind that you rub on your skin after sunburn ;-) )
braggs amino acid (optional - but adds a salty taste to the soups)
vitamin e oil (helps with enemas...)

herbal teas mix ingredients: barberry root bark, oregon grape root,

beet leaf, burdock leaf/root, dandelion leaf/root,

milk thistle, red clover

Vegetables
carrots
kale

chard

broccoli

cauliflower

onion

parsley

mint

spinach

alfalfa sprouts

ginger

purple cabbage

yellow squash

cilantro

green beans

lemon

lime
apples

organic vinegar
prunes
figs

spring water in glass bottles? (I used spring water rather than distilled water)
black cherry juice (for the kidney cleanse)

cardamom pols (if you need the parasite tea)
cinnamon stick
walnut tincture
stevia

GoldenRod Tincture (for the kidney cleanse)
Superphos 20 (http://thebreathoflife.net/catalog/mi_liverflush.php)

Other items:

A vegetable bristle body brush with a long handle (for exfoliating scrubs)
Epsom Salts (for detox bath)
Baking Soda (for detox bath)
Lavender (relaxation) or peppermint (energy) essential oil (detox bath)

Enema bag (I found it at Walmart)

You can find all the products in the "kit" here at a more reasonable price than on the official MV Diet Detox website http://astore.amazon.com/newheadiv-20

Detox Supplies

Juice of the Day

Carrot, Apple & Ginger

You will need: 1 apple, 3-4 carrots, and a slice of ginger.

Juice the apple and carrots and ginger slice in the juicer. Serve immediately!

Delicious!

This is a juice that I use as a baseline for other juices. To add more "power" try adding the following ingredients:

- Stick of Celery
- Handful of Alfalfa sprouts
- Some kale, spinach, other leafy greens

Soup of the Day - the healthy way!

Butternut Squash & Orange Juice

Split a butternut squash down the middle, and scoop out the seeds and set aside. Wash & dry and place on a baking tray. Place a tablespoon of orange juice in the cavity. Cover with foil and bake in a 375 deg. oven for about 45 mins - 1 hr. Test the flesh with a fork - when its soft, its done! Meanwhile, while the squash is cooking, wash the seeds, removing fibers of flesh, and place on a baking tray to dry. Remove baked squash from the oven and allow to cool. Pour the OJ into a blender, and scoop out all of the flesh into the blender, discarding the skins. Puree the squash, and then pour into a saucepan. Add about 6 cups of distilled or spring water (do not use tap water, as it contains chlorine etc which defeats your healthy mission). Bring to the boil and its ready to eat!

When the seeds have dried, bake them in the oven for 30 mins until roasted. Sprinkle on top of the soup and serve.

Enjoy!
